Usually, it is a perfectly normal response to cough when you choke on something. It only becomes an emergency when coughing itself does not clear away the blockage. If you want to learn how to save yourself from choking when completely alone, prepare by learning the Heimlich maneuver (which requires little to no medical knowledge) and calling 911 immediately during and after the emergency.
Every second matters when choking, especially when it’s a solo emergency with no one around to help perform the technique or contact emergency services. The skill may be able to let you take control of the situation that could be life-threatening. It’s a handy skill you can learn and teach family members in your house or condo at One Chuan Grove.
First, Place Fist Slightly Above Navel
Put your fist above the navel, which is the body part below your ribcage. The thumb of the placed hand must rest below the ribcage.
Next, Grab Fist with Other Hand
Grasp the first fist with your other hand, which you must use to forcibly push both inwards and upwards at the same time.
Try to Bend Over a Hard Surface
Lean over a table edge, chair backrest, railings, or any other hard surface and swiftly thrust and shove your upper abdomen against the hard surface.
Keep Pushing
Keep pushing your abdomen until the blockage clears away.
Call 911 Immediately
Keep in mind that these instructions are only informational and cannot be considered professional advice. If in such a case you can reach your phone, call for medical attention right away during and after the emergency.
Put your phone on speaker mode if unable to speak. You may want to get in touch even if you can breathe properly again. This is to check for any bodily soreness, internal injuries, or extended complications.
