Technology has impacted nearly every industry in the world, and the sector of moving and storage services is no exception. Moving and storage companies have adopted advances in technology to make the moving process easier and more convenient for their customers, but in the process, it has made the business more lucrative as well. Here are three advances in moving and storage technology that are changing the way people move.

Online Tools

One of the biggest pain points in moving is determining how many moving boxes you need, what size of truck will hold all your belongings, and how much it will cost to move an entire household. Moving cost estimates used to be very loose, mostly because humans were doing the estimating. Now, though, moving and storage companies can put all sorts of tools in their website that allow customers to enter their specifics and get a fairly precise cost estimate.

Space calculators, box number calculators, self-booking pages, and chatbots are just some of the online tools that moving and storage companies are using to simplify the moving process. When customers can do more of the pre-move work themselves, all companies have to do is show up at the appointed time and do their job. Customers are more satisfied as well because they can instantly get answers to their questions as soon as they have them.

Smart Packing Technology

Packing is often cited as the most dreaded part of a move and with good reason. Until now, it’s a manual process that often results in lost or damaged items. Recently, however, many moving and storage companies have incorporated smart packing technology in their service offerings to streamline the packing process as much as possible for their clients. By using radio-frequency identification (RFID) codes, customers can place a coded label on their boxes to allow them to track their belongings at all times.

Sensors placed on the boxes can also allow customers to monitor the condition of their belongings while in transit, giving them peace of mind in knowing that their stuff is safe and secure at all points along the way. Some companies are even offering smart labels that allow customers to list the contents of their boxes in an app so they can simply scan the labels to find an item they urgently need.

Digital Payments

Moving is hard enough without having to remember to get cash to pay the movers or to find where you packed your checkbook. Fortunately, many moving and storage companies are allowing customers to use digital payment apps to pay for their services. This makes the entire process convenient and prevents movers from having to carry large amounts of cash after a job. In other words, it’s safer and easier for all parties involved in the moving process.

Conclusion

The more pain points that the moving and storage industry can eliminate for their customers, the more customers will use moving and storage services. Advances in technology like those listed here are making strides in making the entire moving process much simpler than it’s ever been.
