To celebrate the contributions of women, the American Women Quarters has always been known to give awards for many years. Moreover, the US Mint will offer some designs between 2022 and 2025. While such designs are different from one another, they will appear on one of the sides of the coin. The firm will also honor women hailing from different and diverse backgrounds. So, in this article, we will cover more about the women’s quarters for 2022.
Maya Angelou Quarter
Under the Women Quarters program, you will come across the Maya Angelou Quarter right at the top. In addition to plays, movies, and autobiographies, this lady is also known for her collection of essays and poetries. She has consistently earned recognition for her work in modern literature and as the ‘remarkable Renaissance woman. To offer a snapshot of her childhood days till the age of 17, she wrote the book ‘I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings’ in 1969. On the other hand, before being a poet and an author, the lady used to do numerous menial jobs apart from being a cook and a performer at a club. But, when she was about to pass away, she started delivering lectures at different places. So, to commemorate her accomplishments, one of the sides of the coin will depict the image of Maya Angelou.
Sally Ride Quarter
The second coin in the Quarters program will depict the image of Dr. Sally Ride Quarter. While this woman started working with NASA in 1979, she is known for her space odyssey in 1983. Sally was also the first LGBT astronaut carrying on with Tam O’Shaughnessy even when she was married to Steven Hawley. While Dr. Sally was going through the selection process of NASA, she was the first lady to be a part of the NASA Astronaut Group 8. Besides, the astronaut has co-written many books for kids interested in studying science.
Wilma Mankiller Quarter
Born in 1945, Wilma Mankiller was known to be the first lady to work as a Chief for the Cherokee Nation. In the 1960s, the political and social movements drove her to pace ahead with the Alcatraz occupation. During that period, she was also actively involved in a campaign. People carried out this campaign to seek land and compensation for a particular tribe. But, when the lady later started working as a social worker, she worked with children for five years. But, when the lady decided to leave politics, she presented her biography on women’s rights, healthcare, and cancer awareness. Before she passed away, she had received many honorary doctorates and ‘The Medal Of Freedom.’
Nina Otero-Warren Quarter
Born in Mexico, Nina Otero-Warren will be shown in the fourth quarter of the program. As time passed, she later became a suffragist and involved herself in US politics. The lady also worked as a Santa Fe Superintendent of Instruction from the period between 1917 and 1929. In addition, she was the first person to be the Republican candidate in the 1922 elections. When she was a congressional representative, she believed that she could effectively support the Hispanos. Soon after getting elected to the House of Representatives, Nina strived to offer social services for the welfare of the people. But, in the 1930s, Nina shifted her focus toward writing. She grabbed the opportunity to express her views on culture and education.
Anna May Wong Quarter
The last subject in the program will be Anna May Wong Quarter. As the first Chinese American woman, Wong became popular in the Hollywood industry. But, even when she paced ahead in her career, she offered help to humanize Chinese Americans through her roles and films. However, despite discrimination and immigration laws, her public image made her famous as an American. With Wong’s journey in mind, a team thought about publishing a book in 2009, ‘The Anna May Wong Story: Shining Star.’ In 2020, Google also came up with a doodle to remember the 97th anniversary of ‘Toll of the Sea.’
